Pre-Flight Checklist
Before heading to site for a TetherX installation, ensure you have everything required for a successful deployment. This checklist covers requirements for both new installations and connections to existing systems.
All Installations
Essential Requirements
TetherBox Unit
- Ensure correct model for the installation (TetherBox, Pico, or Giga)
- Verify unit is activated and assigned to the correct company
Device Credentials
- Usernames and passwords for all Cameras
- NVR/DVR login credentials
- Router/switch admin credentials
- Alarm panel codes (if applicable)
Tip: We cannot connect to Cameras, DVRs/NVRs, or alarms without correct credentials. Verify access before leaving for site.
Internet Connection
- Broadband, WiFi, or 4G router
- Minimum 2 Mbps upload speed, 10 Mbps recommended
- 20+ Mbps upload for optimal performance with multiple cameras
Warning: The system operates without Internet for local recording, but Internet is required for initial provisioning and remote access.
Access Equipment
- Laptop, tablet, or smartphone
- Web browser for configuration
New IP Camera Installations
Cameras
- Compatible IP cameras (check compatibility list)
- Verify cameras support ONVIF and/or RTSP streams
Network Equipment
- PoE switch with sufficient ports for:
- All cameras
- TetherBox connection
- LAN/router uplink
- Consider 20% spare capacity for future expansion
- Cat5e or Cat6 ethernet cables (various lengths)
- Cable management supplies
Power Requirements
- Adequate power capacity for PoE switch
- Consider UPS for critical installations
Existing DVR/NVR Installations
Compatibility Verification
- NVR/DVR must support ONVIF, RTSP, or HTTP streams
- Verify firmware version is up to date
- If unsure, check compatibility with TetherX support
Network Access
- Spare network port on the same LAN as the NVR/DVR
- TetherBox does not connect directly to the NVR/DVR but needs its own switch port
Documentation
- Manufacturer and model names
- Supplier contact details (in case firmware updates are needed)
- Current network diagram (if available)
Optional Considerations
Network Bandwidth
Recording Quality vs Bandwidth:
- 1080p camera: 2-4 Mbps upload per camera
- 4K camera: 8-15 Mbps upload per camera
- Calculate total: (cameras × bitrate) for cloud recording requirements
Storage Capacity
For storage capacity planning and hardware recommendations, see Storage Requirements.
Power and UPS
Critical Installations:
- UPS recommended for 24/7 operations
- Size UPS for PoE switch + TetherBox + router
- Minimum 2-hour runtime recommended
- Consider battery backup for cameras in critical areas
Post-Installation Testing
Before leaving site, verify:
- [ ] All cameras recording locally
- [ ] Cloud backup functioning (if enabled)
- [ ] Live view accessible remotely
- [ ] Motion detection configured and tested
- [ ] User accounts created and tested
- [ ] Mobile app access verified
- [ ] Email alerts configured and tested
- [ ] Network stability confirmed (30+ minutes uptime)
